Rainfall regime

The entire territory of Paraguay is very well irrigated. The rainfall regime (shown in the side exhibit) lowers as tyou go north west. The Oriental region has presipitations that ranges the 1600 mm with areas that reaches 1800mm towrds east. In addition, Paraguay has an extraordinary water system taht irrigates the entire country. Also, Paraguay has on the largest undergraound water reservoirs on earth.

Northern Chaco - a very approximate map of soil potential.

light blue (A) indicates : very high soil fertility apt for both crops and improved pasture sand color (B) indicates : good soil fertility apt for both crops and improved pasture light green (C) indicates : heavy lowland soils of limited ventilation, making good natural pasture, not apt for crops brown (D) : light sandy soils with little organic matter, very wind erosion prone, limited use for crops and pasture pink (E) + red (F) : not apt for any agro use

Soil under no-tillage cultivation

Intensive mechanized agriutlure in Paraguay account for at least 3 million hectares. At least 80% of this is farmed under no-tillage, which makes Paraguay the top producer of oilseeds and cereals under sustainble methods of production.

Most developed areas of the Chaco

1. Line 1 / Agua Dulce:
The area known as Line 1 is located north of Chaco at the parallel 20° level in the buffer zone of forests and scrub, with very good soil quality and favorable climate conditions for agricultural production; the development is based on the remote location from urban cernters that requires goods and services and the transformation of forest into arable land. Other factors to consider are the water availability (under and ground water)and the biodiversity in the area.

2. Fuerte Olimpo (up to Bahia Negra):
Another pole of development is the Fuerte Olimpo area up the cost of the Paraguay river, where significant agricultural investments (mostly Brazilians) has landed. This area, denominated forest and pastures present diferent range of natural conditions and limitations, but no less suitable for agricultural production. The biodiversity in this area is significantly superior to the central and northern Chaco due to the water abundancy and accesibility. The development model is based on the transformation of forest zones into pastures for cattle. Also, due to the natural conditions the urban development is scarce.

3. La Patria:
In an area known as La Patria, named given becuase of the crucial role of a Ranch named similar in the develpment of the area. The area is located almost at the end of the line of rainfall influence and suitable for production, however, has shown its productive potential in all these years with strong investments that accompanied the government's efforts, the introduction of technology through genetics both in pastures and in animal pruduction.
